The Department of Humanities in Medicine is pleased to present The Synapse, a student-edited newsletter containing poetry, art, literature, and photography. The Synapse is a creative outlet open to submissions from the Texas A&M College of Medicine community. Its mission is to serve as a forum where students can creatively blend the scientific and humanistic aspects of medicine.

Meet Us

Hanna Chen, Chairman of the Board Hi I’m Hanna! I joined the Synapse because I love interdisciplinary studies and want to experience medicine from a different perspective. The Synapse gives medical students and professionals a unique opportunity to express themselves creatively, and gives readers a glimpse into the humanity behind the medical profession. In my free time I love to hike, swim, run, and be outdoors! I also love working with kids, and am excited to be able to combine my passion for medicine and children as a pediatrician.

Nida Virani, Acquisition Editor Hey, I’m Nida! I’m proud to be part of The Synapse because I view medicine as a combination of disciplines, and our publication offers the missing pieces. There is a place for creativity and humanity in all professions, especially within medicine, and that is how I view the role of The Synapse. I studied Psychology in undergrad, and I love learning about people and how they see the world, so being part The Synapse is a win-win for me! In my free time, I love to read, bake, discover new music, and watch lots of stand-up comedy.

Sneha Raghunathan, Copy Editor Hi, I’m Sneha! I’m very excited to be on the Synapse board because I believe that creative expression helps us become better doctors and better people! I love that the Synapse gives medical students and faculty an outlet for their artistic skills. I have experience writing and editing, so I’m looking forward to working with all the talented people in our college! When I’m not studying, I like to cook, sing and watch way too much TV.

Nina Tran, Design Editor Hello, World! My name is Nina and I’m so thrilled to be a part of the Synapse! What drew me to be a part of the board as a design editor was to not only tap into my creative side, but to highlight the creativity of our community. After only a brief semester of medical school, I have learned that the A&M medical community is full of multifaceted and wonderful individuals that inspire me to grow beyond our medical training. Aside from occasionally doodling between study breaks, I love to bake and read! I can knit a delightfully warm pair of mittens and I’m proudly a big Harry Potter fan!

Cindy Roman, Managing Editor One of my favorite experiences in undergrad was editing for a student-run publication that shared the stories other outlets did not. That’s how I knew The Synapse was meant for me. Each piece is a true pleasure, and I am so excited to be involved in this side of medicine. When I am not busy studying, I enjoy expanding my personal library of “to-read” books, hoarding music, eating popcorn, perfecting my chai tea, and traveling anywhere and everywhere to visit friends and family.

CJ Conlon, Copy Editor My life goal is to get a Wikipedia page written about me. Not sure if the Synapse is the going to be my big break but I’m giving it a shot. I love Texas country music, being in and around the water, and ferreting out spliced commas.

Joseph Joo, Copy Editor I am passionate about creating and listening to stories. One of the best mediums to tell stories is through writing; I believe medicine creates a unique outlet that intertwines arts and sciences for people to cultivate their stories. I am excited to be involved with The Synapse to have the chance to read and reflect upon the journeys of others. I am an avid sports fan and love to travel.

Tiffany Chan, Design Editor I am very pleased to serve on The Synapse’s editorial board, helping to amplify the unique voices of the College of Medicine. Aside from studying medicine full-time, I’m also a graphic designer, community organizer, aspiring polyglot, and liberal arts neurd with a penchant for social justice and science—particularly brains! My panacea is music, magic realism, the great outdoors (well, it's really omnipresent wanderlust), a mostly decolonized yoga practice, and baking up a storm.
